Tennis Wall Drills: Forehand and Backhand Practice

Tennis wall practice lets you repeat your groundstrokes while focusing on one part of your technique. The recess at the top slows the ball’s return, giving you time to prepare for the next stroke. Start gently, choose a manageable rebound board setting and work on one thing at a time.

One focus for each drill

Choose one aspect to watch: contact in front of your body, knee bend, follow-through or weight transfer. Play several controlled strokes, return to your starting position and pause when the movement becomes less precise. A coach can give you immediate feedback.

Three tennis wall drills

1. Forehand and contact point

Start with gentle forehands. Notice whether you meet the ball in front of your body, and return to your starting position after each stroke. Focus on controlled movements and a balanced playing rhythm.

2. Backhand and rhythm

Repeat a few backhands at a steady rhythm. Focus on controlled movements as the ball returns at a steady rhythm. If you lose control, pause and start again. Then try alternating forehand and backhand.

3. Adjust the ball trajectory

Change the angle of the continuously adjustable rebound board and observe the trajectory and bounce. Choose a setting you can manage comfortably. Ball pressure also affects the bounce: older or lower-pressure tennis balls bounce lower. Details and rebound board settings.

A ten-minute example

  1. 2 minutes: warm up gently.
  2. 3 minutes: forehand with one technical focus.
  3. 3 minutes: backhand at a controlled rhythm.
  4. 2 minutes: alternate strokes or finish gently.

Use this as an example. Adapt the duration and hitting intensity to your ability and how you feel, taking breaks as needed.
